Eventually I just said OK, let’s just make a really powerful chat log viewer with no other feature. He told me it would take a lot of time and effort, but I would always just keep bringing it up and he would keep saying no or it’s not really worth the trouble. And I always kept pestering Kent to make Chax again. And the search in Messages was always busted where it would beachball or I could never find what I was looking for. But I always craved a message log viewer, because I was always looking for a chat. With Kent and I becoming busy with Flexibits, Chax just kinda died. And Chax stopped working because of other changes that occurred with OS X. Chax was something that I always used for iChat and then of course Messages eventually came into being. “Chatology came out of the original relationship that Kent and I had with Chax. ![]() Some things are made just as a labour of love. ![]() Michael explains how and why they still work on the app, despite it not being successful for them. And he and I decided to start Flexibits.”Ĭhatology is like the spiritual successor to Chax for modern Macs. Eventually after I left Cultured Code, I told him that I wanted to start my own thing with my ideas. We hired Kent as a developer and he did some work with us. We became good friends and as I started working for different companies, including Ambrosia and Cultured Code, I asked Kent if he wanted to work with me while at those companies. I also did a lot of testing for him, helping him improve the app. He added a log viewer eventually and I helped design it. We started talking and he would implement the ideas. I had a bunch of ideas and I said you should do this and you should do that and he liked my ideas. I thought it was such a great app and it added so many features to iChat, which I used at the time. I met Kent in 2006 and I met him because of Chax. “Chax had actually come out a while ago, back in 2005. It is very important in Flexibits’s history and highlights their working relationship and why they decided to come together as Flexibits. Speaking of things in the past, Chax for iChat on Mac was a huge deal when it launched and was one of the first few projects that Michael and Kent worked on together. Fate works in surprising and delightful ways sometimes.” Well, obviously the odds are 365 to 1, but, yeah, we were incorporated on the same date Apple was incorporated. ![]() The progression is: Bsus4 to B Asus4 to A Gsus4 to G F#sus4 to F#.For those interested in theory that means the 4th becomes the 3rd of the chord once it resolves. For example: the first chord is a Bsus4 that resolves (as in take the pinky off) to a B major chord. I wasn't sure if I got this across clearly in the video. The chords you'll actually be playing are suspended fourth chords (sus4) resolving to the major chord. It does sound slightly different, but it’s not likely anyone will hear the difference (except diehard Who fans that play guitar and are fanatics about playing things the way the original artist played it. Alternative Form #2: Another way to do this is to play it as a bar chord (see cheat sheet for fingering).A good strategy is to try this first and then try adding the thumb for the bass no later. I show in the video how to deaden out the 5th string and the 1st string. Alternative Form #1: The easiest form involves leaving out the thumb and playing the top strings only.Even though this is the way Pete Townshend plays the chords it's really fine to use one of two alternate forms. Fingering the chord with the thumb around the neck will be easier for some people than others. In this lesson I've chosen to teach (in my humble opinion) the most useful part, and the most difficult part, of “Pinball Wizard” by The Who. I'm still not sure.īut “Pinball Wizard” was indelibly stamped in my brain for the rest of my life. I listened to this album over and over, probably in part trying to figure out what they were talking about. I found the Tommy album (actually released before Whos Next). Such a BIG sound… with melody and chords. He sounded like two guitar players playing at the same time. Pete Townshend was totally amazing to me. I actually didn't try to play their songs for a long time. The music really spoke to my teenage soul. I jumped in right around the time they released “Behind Blue Eyes” and “Won't Get Fooled Again”. How could you not want to play guitar after hearing “Stairway to Heaven” as a teenager? I think it was their most well-known song that first awakened my desire to play the guitar when I heard it drift over the radio waves in my room during one of my “moody teenage” days. I remember hearing Santana… Kind of like a first love, I'll never forget Santana. In terms of graphics the problems are a bit worse, with issues ranging from everything looking rather blotchy to weird visual problems in games like Ms. Sound effects and music are generally good, but the bass in some tunes and a few nitpicky blips and bleeps don’t come out quite perfectly. Either way, the greatest shame here is that on a modern system with so much power, these games aren’t as perfectly represented as they should have been. So either we’re dealing with a case of games running on an imperfect emulator, or the games have been recoded somewhat from scratch, and in a spotty manner at that. While at times it seems like the games truly may be emulated from the original arcade ROMs, at other times I know the originals never had some of the oddities and problems several titles exhibit. Getting down to the nuts and bolts of the games, I think the most difficult thing about reviewing this title is knowing just what I am criticizing. While there is no doubt that there are other, some arguably better, means to play some of the classic titles in this compilation, at $30 I consider this a steal for old-schoolers lacking access to the games otherwise. Not only would this number of titles usually span 2 or 3 editions, but the Arrangement titles are being offered for the first time on this disk as a bonus. For anyone familiar with the previous entries in the Namco Museum series for other platforms, this is actually an enormous offering. Filling out the rest of the roster are classic racers Pole Position I and II, and arcade spelunkers Dig Dug and Dig Dug Arrangement. For the shooter fans there are Galaga, Galaga Arrangement, and Galaxian. Pac-Man, Pac-Man Arrangement, Pac-Attack, and Pac-Mania. Beginning with the Pac-Man family, we have Pac-Man, Ms. For those unaware of the games in this edition, there are a whopping 12 titles represented, though many of them are admittedly variations on one another. Sometimes, Dig gets a little hung up when trying to make turns or avoiding triggering a rockslide…and it can be a bit frustrating if you are trying to line up big scoring options and simply can’t get your character to safety. While some may characterize this newest installment in the Namco Museum series as yet another attempt to cash in on games long past their prime, I’d like to personally offer a firmly dissenting opinion. As you play, you realize your pump works through paper-thin walls which allow you to kill the enemies without endangering yourself. The controls for the game are fun, but there are some real sticking points. The challenge is to find the happy medium to maximize both. By boosting scoring options (by dropping rocks on multiple characters and digging through more ground), you open Dig up to more attacks as the creatures get faster. The Pookas and the Fygars can be quickly eliminated in early levels for some quick advancement, but in doing so, score is hurt. The challenge with Dig Dug is trying to balance this score vs. Like many classic arcade games, the goal is both “boards” and high score…and the game keeps the fun going by adding more and more difficulty to the game as it progresses. My friend had a Commodore 64 with the game and arguing over who had next game was a frequent battle because of our love for the game. ![]() ![]() ![]() Then, physicists asked: how does the electron “know” where it is going? When it leaves one orbit, it gives off a photon of light.Once an electron was in orbit with an energy higher than the lowest possible energy, it would at some time move to a lower energy, but Bohr could not ascribe a cause to that event. Even worse, these “quantum jumps” in orbit seemed to occur without a cause. However, in the Bohr model nothing vibrated the light just appeared as the electron changed orbits. Scientists in 1913 expected that light was emitted in the same way, so an electron in an atom would vibrate to emit light. A radio station that broadcasts at 99.5 megahertz shakes electrons in its antenna 99,500,000 times per second. For radio, microwaves, etc., we still do that. ![]() The frequency of the shaking determined the frequency of the wave. In the early 20th century, electromagnetic radiation such as radio waves was created by shaking electrons back and forth.(I discussed this one in a previous post.) Bohr had no logical reason for the nonradiating electron, but without it, atoms would not exist. If it did, the electron would spiral quickly into the nucleus. Yet in Bohr’s model the orbiting electrons did not radiate. An electron moving in a circle is accelerating. An accelerating charged particle will emit continuous radiation. As a result of Bohr’s quantum-classical blended model, five major concerns arose. Thus, it was the beginning of a revolution but not as great as the revolution that was to come soon. Many physicists were not just unhappy with some of the assumptions, they were sure the entire model was absolutely wrong.īasically the Bohr model of the atom was an attempt to use the classical physics of Newton, Maxwell, and others but incorporate the quantum ideas of Planck and Einstein. However, like several other developments that I have discussed in these posts, the history is more complex. Physicists were troubled by some of its assumptions, but it worked, so they moved on. If you look at a description of the Bohr model of the atom in most textbooks or many popularized accounts, you could easily get the impression that it was an immediate success. In this installment of the history of atom theory, physics professor (and my dad) Dean Zollman discusses the problems physicists had with Bohr’s model – and they could get downright catty. ![]() ![]() You can spoof your location to prank or trick your friends and family into thinking that you're on vacation or taking a trip when you're not.
